Exercise is known to help a number of chronic diseases and a wealth of evidence is now available to prove it's effectiveness. In some cases exercise has been shown to be more beneficial than medicine in managing certain medical conditions, and sometimes maintaining a healthier more active lifestyle can help to reduce the dose of medication you may be on (this should only be done in agreement with your doctor or the healthcare practitioner who is managing your condition). Your prescribed exercise provided by the iPrescribe Exercise App should be considered as important as the prescribed medicine you receive from your Doctor.
Increasing activity levels can also help those who are more sedentary or at risk from developing long term health conditions to reduce their disease risk. The iPrescribe Exercise App is for everybody to monitor their health, and to see the effect that exercise has on their health data
We have a library of information available on the app for each condition (go to 'more' on the dashboard and then to 'library'). We list the benefits of exercise and advice on exercising safely.
The disease specific symptoms you should watch out for which may be precautions to exercise.
We also include disease specific contraindications (more serious symptoms which will prevent you from exercising).
Data is only stored on the user's phone so it remains completely private to the individual. The app can however export all of your exercise and health data and generate a progress report which can be emailed to your healthcare practitioner at any stage of the exercise programme if you would like. This allows you to share your progress, perhaps with your GP, who may use the data at your next consultation.
We will suggest a range of different objective health measures for you to record which will be linked to your specific health profile, fitness goals or medical condition, the app will prompt you to update your health profile on a weekly basis (see instructional video below).
The iPrescribe Exercise App has a built-in cardiac monitor which allows you to monitor your own heart rate both immediately after exercise (to check you are working at the correct intensity) and also to record your resting heart rate (which is a good measure of your current fitness level) once a week. If you are on medication which affects your heart rate (e.g. beta blockers) your cardiac response to exercise will be altered so the app will automatically adjust your predicted maximal heart rate response.
We will offer you an optional 6 minute timed walk at the start of the programme, at week 6 and again at week 12. This is a medically validated fitness test which provides valuable information about your current fitness level and will show your progress over the course of the programme.
